You can learn English
#AnyoneCanLearnEnglish
I truly believe that anyone can learn a language. I know it takes time and therefore patience, but it can be done with a certain amount of planning and motivation. You must want it. If you are being forced to learn (because your mum tells you to do it!) rather than being inspired to learn (because there could be a great promotion at the end of it) then it’s a hard road.
I teach adults in business and the most common things I hear are, “Sorry, I didn’t have time” or “I was too busy this month”. Both comments have the same consequence – no study was done. I completely sympathise. I am trying to learn French and it’s a long, hard road. I’m a busy person. Days pass in a blur of lessons, renovations, paperwork. But there are 168 hours in a
week. I try to sleep for 56 of them. I work for around 40, so that leaves…………er, 72 hours. Um, er, hmm...................
#TimeManagement
So, what do I do with my time? On reflection, some things I must do, like shopping for groceries, walking my dog or doing household chores (which I hate). I am also renovating a house, so I feel that any spare time should be spent on that. OK. But that is something I choose to do. So, why don’t I choose to study?
That’s the big question, isn’t it? If you had a choice of studying English or cleaning out your oven with a toothbrush, I bet most of you would prefer the oven. I know I would, even though I hate cleaning. Studying means thinking, remembering things, working things out. Studying means getting your books out and working. But does it? Really?
You could improve your English by watching a TV series you love with subtitles, or reading a book, listening to a podcast, talking to yourself works too. Forget the books for a moment. The most important thing is that you need to do something in English. Anything really. But something you ENJOY.
Learning does not have to be a chore. OK, you need to schedule time to do something in English every day but there are so many methods you could try. Cook using a recipe in English, read books, use apps to increase your vocabulary. If you like writing, make charts, flashcards or if not, talk to yourself. You need 10 minutes a day to think, listen, speak, or write in English. As you improve, you’ll enjoy spending more time on it and therefore you’ll improve even more.
It’s step by step.
There is a saying that you don’t need to see the wholestaircase, just take the first step.
Maybe that step is contacting me or maybe try one of the methods I mention in the blog. But doing the activity is how we improve, not just thinking about it. Put a few minutes in your schedule aside for English. Maybe do something while you eat breakfast, a few minutes on the bus or train, perhaps a quick podcast during lunch or read a book before you sleep. Find a
method and schedule that works for you.
